This page contains a list of Permanent Trails, National Trails, Long/Medium Distance Walks which have a Royal Connection on the route or pass along/over a River. These walks are therefore eligible for inclusion in your Special Programme Record Book. (Please note – where there are multiple distances and the connection is not on all routes – you will need to have walked the route/distance with the connection )
This page has been updated 24th February 2025 and is very much a work in progress. Clubs /Walk Organisers have been contacted to advise the BWF if their routes pass along or over a River or have a Royal Connection.
The list will be updated as new information becomes available. This list is offered as a place to start your walking adventure in discovering the various rivers we have in the UK or seeking out Royal Connections. If you come upon an event that is not on the list, use it and then let us know so we can add it to the list. projects@bwf-ivv.org.uk .
It is not intended that this page will specify the actual river or royal connection – especially in relation to the royal connection, we hope that finding the connection will be fun on your walk. We will encourage walk organisers to mention where there is a connection in their route description .
Due to some man-made water courses and/or sewage channels having “river” in their name; to keep within the aim of the Rivers Special Programme, only rivers which meet this definition are acceptable: A river is a natural flow of freshwater that flows on or through land towards another body of water downhill
